1918 1d dull carmine KGV Head (shade = G73) with the variety ‘die I substituted cliché [advanced state]’ [plate position = IV/35], used – no thins, tears or bends. Has a Starling certificate.
This is the very late state of the substituted cliché, showing a great deal of deterioration of the soft copper metal that was used to make the units that replaced the rusted clichés. This wear of the substituted unit has resulted in the top of the crown being completely worn away and the corners of the frames becoming very rounded. This is the only example I have ever seen that has a break in the outer frame line and is likely from the very final printing using the left plates before they were retired.
