AUSTRALIA

1924 £1 grey Kangaroo, 3rd watermark, overprinted SPECIMEN (type C, sub-type 6a = shaved N of Specimen), with the variety ‘retouched bottom frame’ [position = L60], mint hinged – no thins, tears or bends. Has a Starling certificate.

This is the rarest of the specimen overprint varieties, occurring only once in the forme of 30 units that made up the overprint plate and only developing near the end of the life of the type C specimens. Until now, it was only known that this sub-type 6a variety came from the 6th column of the overprint forme, this stamp now confirms that this variety is from position 30 in the block of 30 (i.e. column 6, row 5).
